Knock Off Pattern Making - 4 part course - Oct 19, 26, Nov 2, 9 (11am - 2pm)

Do you have a favourite garment you wish you could make again and again? In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to “clone” an existing piece of clothing by turning it into a reusable sewing pattern, without taking it apart.

This class will guide you through professional methods for translating a woven or knit garment into a working sewing pattern using simple tools, drafting methods, and careful observation. You’ll learn how to trace shapes accurately, capture construction details, and translate a finished garment into a working pattern you can sew from in the future.

We’ll cover how to make fit adjustments, determine grainline, add seam allowances, and drafting methods for perfecting your pattern once it is traced. You can also make a muslin of your garment to review the construction and fit. By the end of the workshop, you’ll have a drafted pattern for your chosen garment, an understanding of the order of operations for your pattern, and the confidence to repeat the process on other pieces in your wardrobe.

This workshop is ideal for:

• Anyone who wants to recreate beloved ready-to-wear pieces in their own fabric choices

• Sewers who want to understand garment construction more deeply

You’ll learn:

• How to evaluate a garment 

• Tools and materials needed for copying garments

• Techniques for tracing various garment components

• How to add seam allowances, grainlines, and markings

What to bring:

• two to three of your favorite garments for cloning (not too bulky, no linings, and not heavily tailored). We will be selecting one garment for the class.

• Notepad and pen
